Founded in 2007 in Corinth, Fereikos is one of the driving forces in the worldwide development of organic snail farming. In fact, after just one year in operation, Fereikos became the International Institute of Snail Farming’s exclusive representative in Greece. Fereikos’ international vision and innovative business model have since fueled its rapid growth, and allowed the company to take organic snail farming into entirely new directions.
Up the Value Chain
How do you innovate the snail market? Simple. Invest in variety and quality. In 2011, Fereikos Helix launched the subsidiary Fereikos Gefsis, offering high quality snail products, cleaned and pre-cooked, and ready-to-cook meals. Consumers can now even choose snails with or without shells.
Initial funding difficulties and the drag of the financial crisis couldn’t hold Fereikos back. Instead the company has carved out a niche market for itself domestically, simultaneously growing international markets. Astonishingly, production throughout the company’s network has increased 650 percent in just five years time.
A New Twist in Greek Agriculture
Snail production offers a whole new dimension to Greek agriculture, one of the country’s most competitive sectors. Fereikos’ foray and unprecedented success in the field has served as inspiration for hundreds of aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs, who see vast potential in specialty agricultural goods.

Why Fereikos Helix is Successful
Quality in its services and products. The company refuses to cut any corners in offering the best. This means continuous research, collaborations, new services and customer care. Such commitment to quality is also evident in the company’s all-natural approach: Fereikos’ products derive exclusively from organic farms, they are recyclable and they do not use any additives or preservatives.
The Innovative Edge
Apart from the many unique snail-products the company has developed, Fereikos has also perfected the “open full biological cycle of production”. This production method allows for full completion of the snails’ natural biological cycle and ensures continuous availability throughout the year—a boon when managing a rapidly expanding global supply chain.
Funding proved one of the biggest hurdles for Feriekos Helix in the startup process. In an unbelievably tough credit market, the company had to build everything with a single small loan obtained from a local bank. So Fereikos’s growth model has been lean and, quite literally, organic. But its success and growth rate speak to its ability to overcome the odds and its strong management.
Goals for 2013
Fereikos wants to seize the coming year to further grow its snail farming network and export its expanding product list worldwide.
